The Annual Stanford US-Russia Forum (SURF) Issue for the 2019-2020
It is with great pleasure that we present the annual Stanford US-Russia Forum (SURF) journal for the 2019-2020 academic year. This was the 12th year of the conference and a significant period both for our organization and for bilateral relations between the US and Russia. Since the inception of SURF in 2008, US-Russia relations have undergone a series of vicissitudes and transformations. This year's research was conducted under particularly pressing and complex conditions, not just for geopolitical reasons, but also because of global health and human security concerns. Such unprecedented circumstances of the global pandemic, aggregated with preexisting and ongoing geopolitical tensions between Russia and the US made all the more salient the relevance of each individual group's topic. The ability of the SURF delegates to triumph under these circumstances is a testament to their dedication, maturity, and character, both as researchers and individuals.
