Author Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in submitting to Hinšuušte. We encourage authors in any discipline to submit their work, but the submission must have Native American or Indigenous studies as its core theme. The Editorial Board seeks to publish the highest quality research and, as such, asks that every author adhere to their field's expectations regarding methods, sources, data, and citations. If accepted, the editorial team will work with you to ensure generalized formatting for the journal.

We strongly encourage submissions in Indigenous languages. If you wish to submit an article in an Indigenous language, include both a file of the proposed article in the respective Indigenous language as well as English. Please note that if accepted, your article will be published in both English and the Indigenous language. Therefore, it is likely that the original submission will be pared down to fit other submissions into the journal. However, you can keep the original length of your submission until it is accepted.

If your submission utilizes oral stories, human subjects, or otherwise sensitive material, this must be noted during the submission process and explantations for usability must be included. Any submission that includes questionable ethical use of Indigenous stories, individuals, or artifacts will be immediately rejected. Please see our submission guidelines for more information.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements of your field.
  • Your research has followed all necessary ethical guidelines for the use of human subjects and/or Indigenous oral stories and artifacts.
  • For those submitting in an Indigenous language, ensure that two copies (one in the Indigenous language and one in English) are submitted.
