About the Journal

Hinšuušte is a Chochenyo word meaning "knowledge," "wisdom," or "to know." The founders of the journal sought a word that represented not only the academic nature of the journal, but also represented the place from where the journal comes. Through conversations with the Muwekma Ohlone tribe, we received permission to use hinšuušte (phonetic: hin-shush-te) as our name. We publish academic work covering all dimensions of Native American and Indigenous studies, and, importantly, seek to be an outlet for Native American and Indigenous students to present cutting-edge research in their respective discipline. The journal is currently housed in the Native American Cultural Center (NACC) at Stanford University.
