Information for Authors

The Stanford Southeast Asia Journal is an open-access, student-run journal based at Stanford University with administrative support provided by the Center for Human Rights and International Justice. The Journal aims to be an interdisciplinary forum on Southeast Asia. We feature research by both undergraduate and graduate students from institutions around the world in all disciplines, including those from outside Stanford University. These published articles are included within the Google Scholar database.

Materials in the Journal do not represent the views of the editors. The individual authors are solely responsible for the opinions and the accuracy of facts published in the articles.

Eligibility

The Journal accepts submissions created during the author’s post-secondary education, including undergraduate and graduate education. Manuscript submissions will be allowed up to one year after the author’s graduation. Submissions are welcome from students from all institutions in any location, and it is not necessary for authors to have any affiliation with Stanford University. For works with multiple authors, all authors must approve the submission of the work to the Journal. Works may list multiple co-first authors.

The Editors welcome submission of manuscripts that have a regional focus pertaining to Southeast Asia (the 10 Association for Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) member states and Timor-Leste, or ASEAN as a regional entity), although the content of the submissions may draw from any discipline. Submissions are considered on a rolling basis until the deadline mentioned for a specific issue. Authors can submit multiple works but only completed works will be considered for publication. The submission must not have been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

Format

Please submit your work in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format. Manuscripts prepared in any consistent scholarly style will be accepted but should follow the guidelines listed in this section. It is recommended, but not necessary, for manuscripts to be prepared according to the Chicago Manual of Style, using endnotes. Submissions should include a complete Bibliography of all works used and URLs for the references should be provided, where available. The text should be double-spaced, uses a 12-point font, and employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses). Please include all illustrations, figures, and tables in the same document with the rest of your submission, preferably placed within the text at the appropriate points. Generally, submissions should not exceed 6,500 words.

Please include a cover page to your submission listing the names of all authors as well as their degree status (e.g. Ph.D. candidate), departmental and institutional affiliation, and email addresses. Identifying information should not appear anywhere else in the manuscript to ensure blind review. Please also include an abstract of around 200 words. The abstract must concisely summarize the contents of your paper. If submitting images, tables or charts, include captions and source information.

All submissions must be written in English. Published materials shall employ American spelling conventions according to reference work from Merriam-Webster but direct quotations should follow spellings used in source material. When using terms in Southeast Asian languages, the Editors prefer using Romanization in most cases, but the Journal can print these in the scripts of most Southeast Asian languages where necessary. The Editors ask that submissions should engage with material produced by local authors in Southeast Asia and works produced in Southeast Asian languages, as appropriate.
