Syncretizing Critical Pedagogy and Progressive Education
Abstract
Social justice education often fails to implement the equitable relationships promoted within its curriculum, resorting to traditional methods of teaching that Paolo Freire describes as the "banking model" of education. Conversely, progressive and alternative pedagogies may not explicitly name and challenge the structures of inequality and injustice in society. This paper examines intersections of progressive pedagogies and teaching methods with the social justice goals of critical pedagogy, reviewing literature on Montessori education as well as teaching strategies like project-based learning, interdisciplinary learning, and service learning.
